Sir John Edward Sulston (1942-2018), British biologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986. He was awarded the Darwin Medal in 1996 in recognition of his leadership in the study of genome analysis with the potential to have a profound impact on the whole of biology. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2002 or his work on the cell lineage and genome of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans.
