Sir Michael Anthony Epstein (1921-2024), British virologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979 and served on its Council from 1983 taking the role of Foreign Secretary between 1986 and 1991. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1992 in recognition of his work on the isolation of the Epstein-Barr virus. He gave the Leeuwenhoek Lecture in 1983, the Florey Lecture on 1986, the UK-Canada Rutherford Lecture in 1988 and the Humphry Davy Lecture in 1992.
