Head and shoulders portrait of Volker Heine, inclined to the right and looking directly to viewer through dark rimmed spectacles. He has a goatee-style beard and is dressed in a dark suit jacket with check weave, white shirt and silk tie.

Volker Heine, German-born New Zealand and British physicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1993 in ‘recognition of his contributions to solid state theory, in particular the bonding and structure of solids’.
