Raymond Hide (1929-2016), British physicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1971 and served on its Council between 1988 and 1990. He was awarded the Hughes Medal in 1998 for ‘his distinguished experimental and theoretical investigations of the hydrodynamics of rotating fluids and the application of such basic studies to the understanding of motions in the atmosphere and interiors of the major planets’.
