Cyril Hilsum, British physicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1979 and served on its Council between 1982 and 1984. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 2007 in ‘recognition of his many outstanding contributions and for continuing to use his prodigious talents on behalf of industry, government and academy to this day’. He delivered the Clifford Paterson Lecture in 1981 on 'Electronic displays: the link between man and microcircuit' and the Philips Lecture in 1989 entitled ‘Does industrial R&D pay?’
