Mary Frances Lyon (1925-2014), British geneticist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1973. She was awarded the Royal Medal in 1984 in ‘recognition of her distinguished contributions to the discovery of X-chromosome inactivation as a mechanism of gene dosage compensation.’
