    Joel Mandelstam (1919-2008), British microbiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1971. He presented the Leeuwenhoek Lecture in 1975 on ‘Bacterial sporulation: a problem in the biochemistry and genetics of a primitive development system.’
