John Charles Polanyi, German-born Canadian chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1971. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1989 in ‘recognition of his pioneering work on the electromagnetic radiation emitted from chemical charges, leading to the basis of the chemical laser process’ and gave the Bakerian Lecture in 1994 on ‘Photochemistry in the adsorbed state, using light as a scalpel and a crystal as an operating table.’
