Description
View of a rocky valley amongst jagged mountain peaks. Collections of snow can be seen on the higher slopes, with some grass and foliage visible in the foreground and on the lowers slopes towards the edges of the image. This valley is la Berarde in the Dauphiné Alps, Southeastern France.

James David Forbes (1809 - 1868), British physicist and glaciologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1832. He was awarded the Rumford Medal in 1838, the Royal Medal in 1843 and delivered the Bakerian lecture in 1842 and 1846.
