    View of the Bernese Alps showing prominent peaks including the Jungfrau and the Mönch, from the expansive Aletsch Glacier. Two men are show in the foreground, one sitting on a rock and one standing with a large pole. Many of the mountains are labelled, the Jungfrau can be seen towards the left of the image, with the Mönch and Trugberg visible towards the right.

    James David Forbes (1809 - 1868), British physicist and glaciologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1832. He was awarded the Rumford Medal in 1838, the Royal Medal in 1843 and delivered the Bakerian lecture in 1842 and 1846.
