Description
Three-quarter length seated portrait of Margaret Bryan with her two daughters, Ann Marian (left) and Sarah Maria (right). Margaret is shown at a desk, holding a quill in her right hand and with a letter signed 'C [Charles] Hutton' in front of her. The group shown with a telescope and armillary sphere behind them, with a celestial globe, sextant and dividers by the desk in front of them.

Margaret Bryan (c.1759-1836), English natural philosopher and scientific educator, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. Charles Hutton FRS (1737-1823) wrote a public endorsement of her astronomical textbook, A Compendious System of Astronomy (1797).
