    Description
Map of the known world in 1764, showing the entirety of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The north and west coasts of Australia are also shown, alongside a small portion of New Zealand. Most of North America is included, but with parts of the west coast and most of Alaska and Canada undocumented. Antarctica is also absent from the map.

Plate 1 from Le petit atlas maritime: recueil de cartes et plans des quatre parties du monde; en cinq volumes ... vol.1, by Jacques-Nicholas Bellin (Paris, Ministere de la Marine, 1764).

Inscribed top right: ‘Tome I. No.1.’ With a cartouche lower left: ‘CARTE RÉDUITE / DU GLOBE TERRESTRE / l’Echelle de Lieues pour mesurer les distances / est au cote gauche de la Carte.’ The framing scale is in French nautical leagues, with the longitude centred on the Paris meridian.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
