    Map of the Northeast coast of the United States, showing areas now included in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont in New England, as well as New York and New Jersey. Penobscot Bay on the coast of Maine can be seen at the top right of the map, with Long Island and the city of New York seen towards the middle. Lake Ontario is visible at the upper left, by the cartouche, and the city of Philadelphia is shown towards the lower left.

    Inscribed top right: ‘Tome I. No.29.’ With a cartouche upper left: ‘CARTE DE LA / NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE / NEW YORK / PENSILVANIE / ET NOUVEAU JERSAY / Suivant les Carte Angloises / Echelle de Vingt cinq Lieues Communes.’ The framing scale is in French nautical leagues west of the Paris meridian.

    Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
