    Half-length photograph showing Major Yuri Gagarin in military uniform visiting the Royal Society’s rooms at Burlington House, London. Gagarin is seen examining Isaac Newton’s telescope [MOB/005] with the manuscript of Newton’s Principia Mathematica [MS/69] open on the table beside it. A number of other dignitaries accompanying Gagarin on his tour can be seen in the background of the image.

    Inscribed below: ‘MAJOR YURI GAGARIN’. This image was published in Notes and Records of the Royal Society, Volume 16, Issue 2 in November 1961.

    Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), Soviet pilot and cosmonaut, was the first person to journey into outer space. He was not a Fellow of the Royal Society but was received by the President and Officers of the Royal Society on 13 July 1961.
