    Map showing the Gulf of Mexico, Central America, and parts of North and South America. The gulf is shown in the centre of the map, with the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola to the east edge and parts of Mexico including the Yucatán Peninsula to the west.

    Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
