    Map of the west half of Hispaniola whilst occupied by France as the colony of Saint-Domingue, the colony covers most of the territory of modern-day Haiti. Gonave Island can be seen just off the west coast.

    Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
