    Map of Petit-Goâve a coastal commune in the south of Haiti, shown here as a French colony whilst the west half of Hispaniola was occupied by France Saint-Domingue. The settlement can be seen at the left side of the map, with a large fort near the coast.

    Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
