    Map of the Virgin Islands archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, showing the island of Saint Croix at the lower left and the islands of Saint Thomas, Saint John, Tortola and Anegada above it. The names of some of the smaller islands are also marked on the map, along with the locations of forts, churches and harbours.

    Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
