Head and shoulders portrait of John Evans inclined to the right and looking directly to viewer. He wears wire rimmed spectacles and has a full beard. He appears to be dressed in formal jacket with buttoned shirt.
Inscribed ‘HH 96’ above his left shoulder and signed ‘Hubert Herkomer’ lower right-hand side.
Sir John Evans (1823-1908) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1864. He served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the Royal Society.

Object history
Herkomer exhibited his new autographic printing technique at the Royal Society conversazione in 1896 (PC/3/2/14), this print of John Evans was on display alongside portraits of Field Marshall Lord Roberts and Edward Onslow Ford.
