Robert Joseph Paton Williams (1926-2015) British chemist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1972. He was awarded the Hughes Medal in 1979 for his distinguished studies of the conformations of computer molecules in solution by the use of nuclear magnetic resonance. He was also awarded the Royal Medal in 1995 in recognition of his contributions in clearly presenting the role of inorganic elements in biological systems. He gave the Bakerian Lecture in 1981on natural selection of the chemical elements and the Rutherford Lecture in 1996.
