Interior view of the Government Laboratories, Clement's Inn Passage, Strand, London. A male technician is shown standing, and heating a glass retort over a burner, with a second technician seated behind. Although the benchtop equipment is different, the position in the laboratory is similar to that shown in MS/373/4/28 (RS.14163).

From the papers of Thomas Thorpe. Sir Thomas Edward Thorpe (1845-1925), British chemist served as Chief Chemist to the British Government, as Director of the Government Laboratory, from 1894 to 1909. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863.
