Description
Head and shoulders portrait of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck within an oval frame. He is shown turned slightly to the right, as viewed, and is wearing a dark jacket with embroidered lapels. Leafy branches of a plant with pale flowers surmount the frame. Below the portrait is a view of the Panthéon in Paris, with two figures seen walking towards the entrance of the building.
Although the inscription claims the portrait is engraved after a painting by Jacques Louis David, the print closely resembles Charles Thévenin’s painting of Lamarck.
Inscribed below: ‘M.LE CHEVALIER DE LAMARCK,/Professor of Botany of the National Institute.’ ‘S.Porter SC./The Pantheon at Paris.’ ‘David pinxt’ ‘Hopwood sculpt’ ‘London, Published by Dr Thornton, Decr 1805.’
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829), French naturalist, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
