Description
Half-length portrait of Aylmer Bourke Lambert within an oval frame. He is shown looking upwards and towards the right, as viewed, with his left arm resting on a copy of Systema Naturae by Carl Linnaeus. Lambert is seen wearing a dark jacket, buttoned-up, and a white cravat. The oval frame is decorated with a variety of botanical forms. Below the portrait is a woodland scene showing a doe and a stag amongst pine trees.
As noted in the inscription, the portrait was engraved by William Holl after John Russell and the woodland scene was engraved by John George Landseer after Ramsay Richard Reinagle.
Inscribed below: ‘AYLMER BOURKE LAMBERT Esqr F.R.S./Vice-President of the Linnæan Society.’ ‘Reinagle A.R.A. ornavit.’ ‘Landseer, Engraver to the King, sculp.’ ‘Russel, R.A, Portrait Painter to their Majesties, pinx’ ‘Holl sculp.’ ‘London, Published by Dr Thornton, April 10th 1805.’
Aylmer Bourke Lambert (1761-1842), British botanist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1791.
