Map of the harbour of Castries the capital city of Saint Lucia, one of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Hills and forests are marked on the map surrounding the bay. The port is shown here by its original name, Carénage, as it was originally named for the safe anchorage offered by its deep water.

Plate 96 from Le petit atlas maritime: recueil de cartes et plans des quatre parties du monde; en cinq volumes ... vol.1, by Jacques-Nicholas Bellin (Paris, Ministere de la Marine, 1764).

Inscribed top right: ‘Tome I. No.96.’ With a cartouche upper left: ‘PLAN DU PORT DU CARENAGE où PETIT CUL DE SAC DE L’ISLE ST LUCIE. / Echelle de Cinq Cent Toises.’

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), French hydrographer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
