    Head and shoulders portrait of Laplace wearing decorations on his dark coat and a ribbon over his embroidered waistcoat. Laplace looks to the right as viewed.

    Inscribed: “Engraved by J. Posselwhite. LA PLACE. From an original Picture by Negeon in the possession of the Marchioness De la Place. Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. London. Published by Charles Knight Pall Mall East.” In pencil lower left: “Born 1749 Elec 1789”.

    Pierre-Simon Laplace was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789.
