Description
Study of a marble sculpture bust of W M Leake, Colonel Leake.
The original bust is now in the collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, accession number M.1-1865.
Embossed stamp below, with crown and laurels: “Mr CLAUDET PHOTOGRAPHER TO THE QUEEN”. Inscribed in pencil lower left: “From Sir E. Sabine’s Collection”. Inscribed in ink verso: “From a Bust of Behnes executed in 1840 of Lieut. Col: W. Martin Leake F.R.S. b. Janry.1777 d. Janry 6, 1860.”
William Martin Leake was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1815. Antoine Claudet was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853.
