    Description
Three-quarter length seated portrait showing Antoni van Leeuwenhoek at his desk. He is seen in a long robe with a frilled shirt underneath and a white cravat around his neck. He has brown, curly hair, a thin moustache and is holding a pair of callipers in his right hand. His desk holds writing equipment as well as a globe and a document with a large wax seal. A natural landscape can be glimpsed out of the window by his left shoulder.

Commemorative print published by the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam after the original oil painting by Jan Verkolje to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Leeuwenhoek’s birth.

Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), Dutch microscopist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1680.
