Description
Profile portrait showing Louis Legendre facing towards the left, as viewed. He is seen wearing a dark jacket and white cravat with hair covering his ears and tied up at the back. Copies of this print were previously thought to depict Adrien Marie Le Gendre FRS and it appears in a number of articles about him. However, in 2005 the case of mistaken identity was revealed and the portrait was established to instead be a likeness of French politician Louis Legendre.
Inscribed below: ‘J. Lith de Delpech’ ‘Z. Belliard’ ‘LEGENDRE.’ ‘Legendre/né à Paris, en 1756./mort à Paris le 15 Décembre 1797.’
Louis Legendre (1752-1797), French politician, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. This portrait was previously thought to represent Adrien Marie Le Gendre (1752-1833), French mathematician, who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1789.
