Under the cloak, Stanhope is seen wearing a dark jacket, light waistcoat and dark cravat. He is facing out towards the right, as viewed, and holds his right hand up on his left lapel.

    Inscribed below: ‘Painted by Lucas – Engraved by W.&F.Holl.’ ‘Lord Mahon’ ‘LONDON, GEORGE VIRTUE.’

    Philip Henry Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope, Viscount Mahon (1805-1875), British antiquary and politician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1827.
