    Description
    Half-length portrait of Gideon Mantell turned slightly to the right, as viewed. He is seen wearing a dark jacket and waistcoat with a wing-collar shirt. He is presented next to a large fossil which is inscribed ‘Iguanodon’. Engraving after an oil painting also in the Royal Society collection.

    Inscribed below: ‘Painted by J. J. Masquerier.’ ‘Engraved by Samuel Stepney.’ ‘To the Right Honorable/The Earl of Egremont,/This Portrait of/GIDEON ALGERNON MANTELL, LL.D./F.R.S. &c./Is by special permission most respectfully inscribed/by his Lordship’s obliged and faithful servant/Samuel Stepney.’ ‘London, Novr 1, 1837.’ ‘Published by the Engraver, 28, Grafton Street, Fitzroy Square.’ Signed below: ‘GAMantell.’

    Gideon Algernon Mantell (1790-1852), British obstetrician and palaeontologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1825, he was awarded the Royal Medal in 1849.
