Full-length portrait showing Frederick Marryat leaning against the base of a column at the top of a stone staircase. He is presented in a dark tailcoat, white trousers, a white waistcoat, black cravat and white wing-collar shirt. He is turned towards the left, as viewed, and is seen with his arms crossed and his right leg crossed over his left.
