    Description
Single print showing half-length portraits of both John Mayow and John Evelyn in separate oval frames. The portrait of Mayow is surmounted by a phoenix, likely a reference to his experiments with combustion and oxidation. Evelyn’s portrait is surmounted by branches of an oak tree, alluding to his book ‘Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber’ published by the Royal Society in 1664.

Inscribed: ‘Philosophers of the last Century/JOHN MAYOW, M.D./JOHN EVELYN ESQ. F.R.S./Caldwall sculp./London. Published by Dr. Thornron, December 20.1800.’

John Evelyn (1620-1706) diarist and horticulturalist was an original Fellow of the Royal Society. John Mayow (1640-1679) physiologist and chemist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1678.
