    Description
    Half-length portrait of Charles Montagu in a loose robe, open shirt and long wig. He is turned slightly towards his left, looking back towards the viewer. He is seen holding his robes with his left hand, his fingers arranged in an unusual position with a gap between his index and middle fingers and his little finger curved.

    Inscribed below: ‘Cooper sculpt.’ ‘CHARLES MONTAGUE / EARL OF HALIFAX.’

    Charkes Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715), British statesman and poet, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1695. He acted as President of the Royal Society from 1695-1698.
