Description
Half-length portrait of Charles Montagu against a dark background. He is shown in a loose robe, open shirt and long wig and is turned slightly towards his left. He is seen holding his robes with his left hand, his fingers arranged in an unusual position with a gap between his index and middle fingers and his little finger curved.
Inscribed below: ‘G. Kneller Bart. pinxt.’ ‘I. Faber / Fecit 1732.’ ‘Charles Montagu Earl of Halifax. & c. c. c.’ ’19.’
Charkes Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (1661-1715), British statesman and poet, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1695. He acted as President of the Royal Society from 1695-1698.
