Description
Three-quarter length standing portrait showing Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester in ceremonial garter robes with the key and wand of office of the Lord Chamberlain. He is shown in an interior setting with an architectural column behind him to the right of the image and a heavy, textured curtain to the left. Although the inscription erroneously notes the print is after a painting by Van Dyke, it is actually based on a portrait by Sir Peter Lely now in the National Portrait Gallery.
Inscribed below: ‘Edward Montagu, Earl of Manchester./From the original of Vandyke, in the Collection of/His Grace, The Duke of Bedford./Drawn by Wm Derby and engraved (with Permission) by T.A.Dean./London, Published Dec. 25, 1827; by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall East.’
Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester (1602-1671), British politician and military officer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1665.
