    Description
    Half-length portrait of Giovanni Battista Morgagni within an oval frame on a pedestal. He is presented in formal academic robes, collar bands and a long wig. He is shown at a desk with a book in his right hand and an ornate inkwell in front of him. The engraving is signed ‘Jean Renard’, a vernacular name used by Italian engraver Giovanni Volpato on some of his prints.

    Inscribed around frame: ‘HIC EST UT PERHIBENT DOCTORUM CORDA VIRORUM PRIMUS IN HUMANI CORPORIS HISTORIA’

    Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), Italian anatomist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1722.
