    Description
    Half-length seated portrait of James Mounsey seen in loose robes, a buttoned jacket and a white cravat. He is turned slightly towards his left and is looking out towards the viewer. He is presented in an interior setting, with a bookcase holding leather-bound volumes and collections of loose papers shown behind his right shoulder.

    A terrestrial globe can be seen behind his left arm, with a curtain draping down on top of it. Mounsey holds an open volume of ‘The Art’ by Hippocrates printed in both Latin and Greek and points at a section with his right index finger.

    Inscribed below: ‘G.F.Schmidt, Sculpt: Regis ad vivium fecit Petrop: 1762.’ ‘DECOR INTEGER’ ‘Jacobus Mounsey, / Sacræ Cæsariæ Majestatis Russiæ Consiliarius intimus & Medicus / Primarius nec non Cancellariæ totiusq: Facultatis Medicæ per Unipersum / Imperium Archiatrus et Director Supremus, Collegii Medici Regalis Edim- / -burgensus et Societatis Regalis Londinensis Socius. &c.’

    James Mounsey (1710-1773), British physician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1750.
