Description
Portrait of Isaac Newton turned slightly towards his right and shown leaning on a counter with his left arm, with his right hand resting on top. He is seen without a wig, showing his wavy, shoulder-length hair. Engraving after an oil painting, the original of which is now in the collection of the Earl of Portsmouth.
Inscribed below: ‘Tho. Oldham Barlow’. The motto of the Earls of Portsmouth is inscribed on a cartouche: ‘EN SUIVANT LA VERITE’.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), British natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, he served as its President from 1703 to 1727.
