Description

He is turned slightly towards his right and holds a large volume labelled ‘BAR/RING/TONN / STAT/UTES’ under his left arm, likely a copy of ‘Observations upon the statutes...' by Pennant’s friend and fellow naturalist Daines Barrington FRS (1727-1800).
Inscribed below: ‘Thos. Gainsborough Pinxt.’ ‘J. K. Sherwin Sculpt 1778’ ‘THOMAS PENNANT Esqr.’ ‘Publish’d according to Act of Parliament Janu. 1st 1779.
Thomas Pennant (1726 - 1798), Welsh naturalist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767.
