Head and shoulders portrait of James Bell Pettigrew as a young man, he is shown wearing a dark jacket and waistcoat with a white shirt, black tie and tie pin. He is seen looking directly out towards the viewer with a neat, dark beard and a side parting in his hair.

James Bell Pettigrew (1834-1908), Scottish naturalist and anatomist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1868. He delivered the Croonian lecture in 1860.
