Description
Full-length seated studio portrait of John Phillips against a plain background with a pair of curtains visible at either edge of the image. Phillips is shown sitting by a round table draped with a heavy cloth, a selection of papers and writing equipment are on the table. He is seen holding a small notebook in his left hand and resting right hand on the table.
Phillips is presented wearing grey trousers, a black jacket and waistcoat, a wing-collar shirt and a black bowtie. He is turned slightly to his right and is looking off, away from the viewer. A signet ring can be seen on the little finger of his left hand and the chain of a pocket watch is visible on the right side of his waistcoat.
John Phillips (1800-1874), British geologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1834.
