Description
Half-length portrait of Arthur Pond in a tunic and headscarf. He is shown turned slightly towards his left and is holding a letter labelled ‘Arthur Pond / Painter’. This impression is taken from the third state of the etched plate. The plate was first created in 1739 and left unfinished from the shoulders down. The image was completed in 1751 and the inscription at the bottom added. This posthumous impression was taken from the final version of the plate, with the date of Pond’s death included at the top.
