Description
Monochrome photograph of a painted portrait of John Pringle. He is shown half-length, wearing a curled wig and a dark coat with bright buttons. He is presented turned slightly towards his right and looking out towards the viewer. The original painted portrait is also in the Royal Society collection.

John Pringle (1707-1782), British physician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745, he served as its President from 1772 to 1778.

Photograph produced for an edition of Social England by Henry Duff Traill (1842-1900), to be published by Cassell. Permission was requested to reproduce the Royal Society portraits of James Bradley, Humphry Davy, Richard Price and John Pringle which was granted in March 1903.
