Description
Half-length portrait of Joshua Reynolds turned towards his right. He is shown wearing a dark jacket with a high collar and is looking out towards the viewer. The wooden frame of the original painted portrait has also been included in this engraving. Engraved by Caroline Kirkley, the daughter of Reynolds’s Manservant, after a self-portrait now in a private collection.
Inscribed below: ‘Sir J. Reynolds pinxt’ ‘Caroline Kirkley sculpt.’ ‘SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS, / Late President of the Royal Academy. / From a picture in the possession of his Neice Mrs Gwatkin of Cornwall. / London Pubd as the Act Directs. March 15, 1795. By A. Molteni, Printseller to her Royal Highness the Duchess of York. No. 76, St James Street.’
Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), British painter, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1761.
