    Description
    Half-length portrait of Daniel Rutherford within an oval frame. He is shown turned towards his right wearing dark academic robes and a white cravat. The frame is surmounted by leaves and flowers. Below the portrait is an illustration of Edinburgh from the west, with the castle and Arthur's Seat clearly visible.

    Inscribed below portrait: ‘DANIEL RUTHERFORD, M.D. F.L.S. / Professor of Botany in the University of Edinburgh.’ Inscribed below: ‘A distant View of Edinburgh.’ ‘Raeburn pinxt.’ ‘Holl sculpt.’ ‘London, Published by Dr Thornton, June 1, 1804.’
