Quartet engraving with portraits of Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton, John Flamsteed and Edmond Halley. Produced in the mid-eighteenth century for the series ‘Poets and Philosophers of England’.
Inscribed: ‘The Honble. ROBERT BOYL’ ‘SR. ISAAC NEWTON obt. anno 1727. / Æta. 85’ ‘Mr. John Flamsteed obt. anno. 1719. / Ætat. 74.’ ‘Mr. Edmund Halley.’
Robert Boyle (1627-1691), British natural philosopher, was founding Fellow of the Royal Society, elected in 1660.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), British natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, he served as its President from 1703 to 1727.
John Flamsteed (1646-1719), British astronomer and clergyman, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1677 and later served on the Council.
Edmond Halley (1656-1742), British astronomer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1678, he served as Secretary from 1713-1721.
