Inscribed in print and pencil, below: “D. McNee. circ. 1835 SIR W.J.HOOKER 1785-1865.” Inscribed verso, in pencil: Royal Society. Presented by Sir J.D.Hooker, KCSI, CB., FRS., July 28, 1896.”
William Jackson Hooker was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1812.

Object history
Presented by Hooker’s son Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1896. He noted that “Many chalk portraits of him were taken for friends by Sir Daniel Macnee of which the best known to me is that which prefaces this book...” A sketch of the life and labours of Sir William Jackson Hooker (1903) pp.lxxxv-lxxvi, originally published in in Annals of Biology, vol.16 no.64, December 1902.
