    Robert Stawell Ball was tutor to the sons of William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse between 1865 and1867. He became Professor of Applied Mathematics and Mechanism at the Royal College of Science, Dublin in 1867. Ball was appointed Astronomer Royal for Ireland in 1874.

    Ball was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1873.
