    Description
    Formal photographic portrait of Samuel Hawkesley Burbury, three-quarter length, full face. Hawkesley is standing with his left hand in his coat pocket and right hand on a folded umbrella.

    Inscription on card reads: 'MAULL & FOX 187A PICCADILLY, LONDON'

    Burbury was trained as a lawyer but left the practice due to deafness. He subsequently wrote on electricity, magnetism and mathematics in conjunction with his friend Henry William Watson (1827-1903). He published A treatise on the kinetic theory of gases in 1899.

    Burbury was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1890.

    The Royal Society holds approximately 600 photographic portraits of Fellows taken at Henry Maull studios between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
