    Full length studio portrait of Thomas Burnet, seated in near-profile, looking to the left as viewed. Burnet, wearing spectacles, is posed before a carved wooden table, a folded sheaf of paper in his right hand which rests on the tabletop.

    Printed below the image: “MAULL & POLYBLANK, LONDON.” The reverse has various inscriptions. Printed: “MAULL & POLYBLANK, Photographers, 55, GRACECHURCH STREET, and 187a, PICCADILLY, LONDON.” A negative number is inscribed in ink: “30677”.

    The Rev Thomas Burnet was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1838.

    Henry Maull (1829-1914) was a British photographer who specialised in portraits of noted individuals. Maull formed several partnerships during his career:

    Maull & Polyblank 1856-1865: in partnership with George Henry Polyblank
    Maull, Henry & Co 1866-1872
    Maull & Co 1873-1878
    Maull & Fox 1879-1908: in partnership with John Fox (1832-1907)

    The Royal Society holds approximately 600 photographic portraits of Fellows taken at Henry Maull studios between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
